The Veiðivötn Lakes are a cluster of crater lakes located in the Icelandic highlands. In fact, there are over 50 lakes of various sizes that comprise the Veiðivötn Lakes. Surrounded by black sands and little vegetation, the lakes are striking in their beauty. What’s more, these bodies of water are known for excellent fishing and are filled with brown trout and arctic char. The fish are typically 3-6 lbs, but 25 pounders have been caught.
The Veiðivötn Lakes are only about 30 km (18 miles) from the Highland Center Hrauneyjar and 130 km (81 miles) from Hotel Rangá. It is recommended that you inquire with the Hotel Rangá reception about fishing prior to your visit, due to Veiðivötn’s popularity. In order to access the lakes, it is recommended that you drive a 4×4 vehicle. During the winter months, the lakes are only accessible via Super Jeep.
