Þjórsárver is a wetland located in the central Icelandic highlands near the river Þjórsá. This area is well-known for its incredible bird life. In fact, Þjórsárver was designated a protected RAMSAR site in 1990. What’s more, it is the world’s largest breeding ground for pink-footed geese. Many other birds nest in the area including the Arctic tern, ptarmigan, golden plover and more.
Þjórsárver is significant due to its lush plant life. The surrounding land consists mainly of marshes and swamps and is thus home to many unique species of mosses and lichens. Þjórsárver is a lovely place to visit, particularly if you wish to do some bird watching. The area is isolated and extremely peaceful.
